Spot light and Cat wlak

Mule deer

On a winter morning in the woods of Yosemite i spotted a mule deer. Its not too difficult to spot a mule deer particularly in North America. But given the fact that i could take a nice click. I was really happy. Oh the fact they get their name from the large mule like ears.

Spot Light and Catwalk

Panamanian Golden Frog

Be Its unique color or their unique way of communicating no doubt there are a wonder. Though they are capable of secreting a poison still would have preferedto be in wild. Sad to know that these are extinct in wild.

Langur:

How easy its for us to identify a human child. For Langur its even easier, infact they are in different color. As they grow up their color changes and they mingle with group. Different color of langur infact helps elders identify them and provide help when when required.

Eyes,

Tigers eye are one of the sharpest and powerful. Stripes in the tiger are like our fingerprints none of them can be same. The strips are always unique and can be an identity

Indeed it’s a cat

Mother’s care

No wonder we are not so different. Orangutans share nearly 97 % of their genetical material with human. I guess an dumb person or an intelligent orangutans can be very comparable.

Birds Color.

Birds color comes from pigments. It’s even called melanin. These pigments reflect red, Yellow or Orange. And infact there is blue color in the birds. The bright blue color we see is just a reflection of light.

Another Chick-a-dee-dee-dee story

On a misty March morning along the shores of Lake Erie two chickadees were busy in their own world. No wonder these little ones have unanimously earned the name as Cute.

Would there be an exception to somebody not eagerly waiting for spring, and these chickadees are no exception.

The call of the chickadee was coming from the distance. I am not experienced enough to distinguish between a two tone chickadee song and a call.

Chickadee songs usually are a sweet two note song (fee bee). (Listen to Typical song or song example at http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Mountain_chickadee/sounds/ac ). Whereas the calls are a lively Chick-a-dee-dee-dee from where they get their name. (Listen to chicka-dee call at http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Mountain_chickadee/sounds/ac)

Also listen to http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9b/Poecile-atricapilla-004.ogg

As the nesting season of April is approaching these chickadees was busy preparing the nest. Though the nest will be built only by the female I was saw both male and female very active.

Infact they were not building the nest but excavating the nest. For the bird of such a small size , Constructing a nest of 2” diameter won’t be an easy job. I watched for 2 days throughout they day they were busy excavating. No wonder it would take 7-10 days for nest excavation. The pairs started their excavation at the right time they still have few more days before the formal spring announcement comes.

Chickadees usually keep their pairs for along time and from the visual it was very evident that these pairs were a strong one.

After watching them for two days I just wish they keep their nest with them. Chickadees usually don’t win the competition among other cavity nesters. They might flee when their nest is distorted or taken from other birds.

Female spend a good amount of time building their nest. Every time I was observing them the female was more cautious to go inside the nest and excavate. Male was friendlier and was slow in moving in and out.

Female made sure most of the time the entry in nest was from different direction. She even tried to exit in the different direction. I just wondered even the female in chickadee are no exception.

With 20% being the chance of young one successfully getting its life, All I could wish was these cute chickadee’s nest should be a successful home to next generation chickadees.

La-riders mini La

Its been quite sometime, we drove to one of the high passes. My best travels mates the La-Riders Rupesh and Amit were missing.

I was planning to cover some mini “la” considering anything less than 18,000 feet should be considered mini. And to cover some thing incredible like 18,000 feet we need our best group.

Yosemite national park was the place which was there in my list for a very long time. (http://www.yosemitepark.com/)

One of the pristine national forest in northern America, Yosemite has got some wonderful passes. Tioga pass at 9,943 feet was the one i was looking to cover. As this was end of November chances are that the pass might be closed for snow.

I started from my sister’s place early in the morning with some good breakfeast. As I was driving prius I was sure I would not have much of a problem for the gas. With 4 hours of drive I was about to reach Yosemite Valley.

Sierra forest with snow covered trees welcomed me. Inner self happiness was very evident with bright eyes and casual humming of songs. To click some picks of the roads and car was not a problem at all, but being a solo traveler is that you loose interest of taking your own snap after a while.

After halting in couple of view point, I reached the half doom. It wasn’t tough to find a parking near the visitor center considering it was a cold early winter day. The moment I saw the things to do in Yosemite I was sure it would just be impossible to cover Yosemite even in a week.

After walking through the sierra forest, I was patiently waiting for the sun to drop down in the Half doom. Soon the place was filled with numerous photographers trying to get the glimpse of the something spectacular. If you think its worth to see changing color in rock when gradually sun sets then you wouldn’t mind spending an hour just watching this.

Immediately after the sunset the whole valley was at its silent best. People left the place in no time. I wasn’t delaying much as I had to find my hotel. Getting up a place to rest in Yosemite could be challenging, out of our normal travel norms I pre booked Days inn in Oakhrust.

I had to drive south of Yosemite park. After hours drive my GPS was getting cranky it was just showing some random direction. After few min Jill lovingly said you have reached your destination only to find that you are in middle of nowhere.

After wandering for a while, I started to drive in south direction towards the main city. After good half and hour drive I finally found some street light and houses. I was much more than happy to see a small village and Days inn just in the middle. I didn’t mind much about the place as I was already tired enough to crash.

Oh why didn’t I mention the status of Tioga pass. Unfortunately it was closed. I was still lying in the bed still thinking it would open the next day.

I believe every minute is the morning is worth when you are travelling. I was ready and had to wait for few minutes before the hotel folks fixed the breakfeast.

After driving for an hour and half I was in middle of the Yosemite Valley. What would you say when you have spotted a wonderful mule deer just at the start. Not a bad start for a 55-300mm lens.

I crossed a pass at 6,643 to reach the Yosemite valley. Unfortunately Tioga is closed even today. I have to keep it in my list, may be next time.

After trekking for few hours I had already covered couple of view points and waterfalls. I still had few hours left. I decided to trek till Mirror Lake. I was keeping my hopes down as the winter would have dried the lake. I was sure I wouldn’t get the amazing reflecting of the doom on the mirror lake.

After couple of hours of walk , I reached mirror lake , not to my surprise there wasn’t much water, I decided to walk a further till I see a stream of water. I rested for a while grabbing my energy bar and drink enjoying the stream. I trekked back just stopping by the visitor center souvenir center.

Even before sitting in the car , I was just wondering when I can come back here. I still believe we would need more than a week even to cover half of this amazing place. While returning I stopped at the tunnel view. I don’t think Yosemite visit can end without a snap of Tunnel view.

Driving back to SFO was happening quick, As my mind was still wandering in high Sierra’s.

Category A AFF Solo Sky Diving

It was on a nice summer weekend, when there was nothing else to do, I decided to do something which was due for a long time.

After lot of browsing I ended up in start sky diving school. Since I wasn’t doing tandem getting a schedule for an AFF Solo diving wasn’t that difficult. I made sure I booked a day on Sunday so that I can reach the sky diving drop zone by Saturday evening.

Now I wasn’t sure if I should get the license for a solo skydiving , and even if I get where I would do when I get back. After doing the first jump and passing with the wonderful grade, now it’s not anymore about getting a license but just about progressing to next category.

I started on the Saturday late afternoon with the tradition of having a heavy lunch before every trip. A full plate of chipotle bowl with double spicy sauce was good enough to start the trip.

After driving for an hour I decided to pass by an outlet mall just to kill some time. I guess killing time was just a reason as I ended buying a good deal of apparel.

Finally grabbing something to eat , driving 30 more min I end up in a super 8, where else would I go if I just want to spend few hours from the Road. Getting sleep on a shady room, artificially aromated with glade wasn’t difficult after half a day walk.

Sunday stated up very early , I unwillingly ate a biscuit with a glass of milk. For some reason I had this belief that I will definitely throw myself when I jump from the plane. After a quick 20 min drive I reach middletown airport. Since the address I had to reach was an airport it wasn't difficult to find ,except for the fact being it was too small to be an airport.

I check at the reception if everything is ok to start the course. A college going girl responds back saying we are pretty tied for tandem, but for AFF we are fine, just that we are expecting couple of more guys.

After waiting for 30 min I get a quick overview of the sky diving kit. It was too much of information considering the fact that I am hearing them for the first time. Just trying to keep only the important things I was kind of tired with information.

Finally the heart beat goes little on higher side after seeing all the kit and people getting ready. My other buddies have arrived by this time and we went into a nice room behind the drop zone for the long 6 hour course.

The course curriculum had 4 sessions spread over 6 hours. First couples of sessions were fine with just getting used to terminologies of the kit and Jump. After the session we spend sometime in trying to get the arch position. To be honest I was pretty tried after being in awkward situation hearing to keep pelvic position from a lady for a long 30 min.

We break for lunch with lot of information. Again unwillingly I decide to grab a 6 inch sub. I was really hungry by now but the fear of throwing was much more than the hunger. Driving back with the ice lemon tea we start the session back.

Now it was time know about the parachute malfunction. How do I react to this , happy to know possible malfunctions that can happen when I try to open my parachute or be really afraid of possible things that could happen.

Till final session I was afraid of the free fall, but after the possible malfunctions and difficulties in landing a parachute now I was just thinking about the canopy. How am I supposed to react when I have know all the possible difficulties and doing it for the first time. The instructor for instance keeps insisting on the YouTube video of a lady who lands in a church building in downtown. Worst part I happen to see that previous week , my bad.

After exhausting 6 hours she declares the end of the course and we got ready for the written test. By this time it was not about adrenaline rush but by now its just about landing back safe. We sat in a nice cozy room to write the 20 odd questions neatly framed over the course material.

I did pass with a 94 % percentage , not bad ahh.. I had to admit it was easy. We waited for the wind to calm down. The wind by now was blowing around 12 to 14 knots , as a beginner we would be allowed only when the wind speed is 7 to 10 knots.

By this time the weird reaction under the stomach was at its peak, and I was no way prepared to continue this feeling till next week if we aren’t allowed to do the jump. By now the clock was showing 6 of clock. I had to admit I stated feeling tired considering I was there in this place exactly at 8 in the morning. May be it was more tiring considering the excitement , fear and heat 

Finally god heard us and pretty girl from reception calls our name. Within few minutes we get dressed up in the full kit. By this time the weird feeling in my stomach has gone. With too many things running in my mind, couldn’t think of if I was thinking of the freefall or controlling the canopy.

With a quick chat from my photographer , all I could say was I am excited. To be honest I did think for a minute if it was better just watching a movie at home rather than trying these things. I definitely did ask why I was doing these things.

But soon I was engaged with my instructors going quickly about all the things they taught from morning. It was too much of information and I was totally engaged in recollecting the things.

I just managed to clear the hotel check in check out process in a dummy plane exit. Then we quickly went to the plane. By then the feeling of fear had vanished I didn’t know why but It was a much better feeling.

I wasn’t nervous as we started to move gradually. I couldn’t ask for more when I was asked by my instructor to go over, what are the things I am supposed to do when I reach every 1000 ft. Recollecting each action that has to be taken we reached 12,500 in time much sooner than I expected.

All being set to exit the place. I wasn’t loud enough for my instructor ,while proceeding the hotel check in , check out. By then the fear factor has diminished completely and all I was thinking to do was to see some solid land.

It was all set by them, then we go. We jump from 12,500 . Since it was my category A I had to jump with 2 instructors on my either side. Instructor on the right was my primary instructor who would help me if I wasn’t able to open my parachute.

I was kind of sure that even I couldn’t keep my Arch position while in free fall, I was confident enough to pull the pilot chute at 5,500 ft. The tiny pilot chute is what will inflate the whole life saving parachute. What if the pilot chute gets hidden behind your current, oh they thought how to twist the whole body.

Theoretically it was easier to do all kind of twist , but falling from 12,500 I don’t think its easy.Anyways we were now in freefall it took 40 odd sec to cover 6,000 ft. I didn’t believe 40 sec was a big time , but infact that was huge.

I was able to do 3 practice pull , check my altimeter 3 times, Show my instructor that I am going to pull by 5,500 ft.. All these could be done in 40 sec. Infact there was plenty of seconds left.

I got delayed in throwing away my pilot chute. I was just waiting for my instructor to give me a green signal , which cost me 500 ft, around 4,900 ft i pulled my parachute.

Once the parachute is up , all I could remember was all the possible malfunctions from the last session . Top of my head my parachute looks clean nothing like the malfunction photos I saw.

Now time was check the toggle, to make sure I can steer , Pull on braked (Flare). I did so , a gentle right steers with my toggle which looked perfect, Left steer looked perfect. One final thing was flare, which also looked very perfect.

Now I was sure I wasn’t going to crash. All I had to do was to make sure I didn’t land in downtown or in electric cable running around. My fear was more landing right on the blade of the place which took us up ,or on a big Wal-Mart truck running fast on the highway.

I checked my altimeter it was showing 2,000 ft. I wasn’t thinking of any theory at moment , I was just enjoying the view of the city from a well sailing canopy. By then time the clock seems to have stopped working , after feeling too many things from the freefall and opening a parachute. It was a very pleasant.

Oh when I reached 1,500 ft it was time to decide on the landing patterns. I had to take minimal help so that I could progress to next level. I decide on the big patch of green grass nothing near to the runway of the plane, nothing near to airport building , nor a pond of water.

I was pretty sure , I wouldn’t mind walking even quarter mile to do a safe landing. By now I have reached 5,00ft, all I have got is 300 ft to make some adjustments. After 300 ft , we just have to land and no adjustment can be done.

I was moving pretty good on the patch where I thought of landing. I was trying to check if I was facing the wind while I am landing. I wasn’t sure about that I was feeling wind from all the direction. I told myself Never mind I am landing safe.

Finally I hear the golden word , Flare flare flare , keep flaring. I pull my toggles in full flare position making sure I am coming close to land as soon as possible. We were advised not see the ground as it might give a feeling of we moving very fast. It didn’t bother me much as I have managed to come close to 30 feet and I knew I am not going to hurt myself.

Finally I land on a green patch , all I could feel is Land, solid land. I hear a voice “:vivek” how was it . Oh it was my photographer , she landed much before than I did. I was more interested to check with my instructor to know if have passed.

A small drive in a truck back to office was quick. I quickly removed my kit after couple of snaps. I rushed to front desk to check my feedback . Instructor gave me a nice feedback and said I have passed and can progress to next level.

Now I go for Category B , few more jumps I can get a solo license. Just waiting for weather to help me in completing few more jumps.

Trip 2 :
Day 1 : Hyderabad – kuntala - Hyderabad ( Morning 4:00 Am to Evening 6 PM)

At the peak of monsoon we decided to check out some waterfalls, we initially thought of a day event, and after much Google search, we found couple of amazing falls. Falling from a height of 42 feet makes kuntala one of the highest falls in Andhra Pradesh.

We are leisure travelers, seeing things and enjoying at snail speed doesn’t bother us. We started on Friday evening catching the NH – 7 towards Nagpur. Half the distance of 230 kms was covered in no time as we were driving in four lane national highways. We decided to have dinner once we reached outskirts of nirmal city . Dhal Makhani and Roti were really good at manpreet Punjabi dhaba. They offered good food though it was small dhaba.

We managed to get a room in hotel Thirumala as sree Krishna residency were occupied. We had a good sleep at night . We started the day pretty early and headed towards Kuntala . The Highway from Nirmal to Kuntal was under construction at time ( Now its finished) . We knew that our first stop point should be Neelima Punjabi Dhaba. Neelima Punjabi Dhaba is last stop for any kind of food you will have before kuntala falls. Apparently the same dhaba is the landmark as you have to take right from the highway toward kuntal falls from here. We would suggest , that we should carry food from nirmal . Caution Neeliam Punjabi Dhaba doesn’t have any kind of snacks.

We started with few paratha and Rice in morning and headed towards kuntala. We decided to come back to nirmal on the same day as we thought we do not have much activity to do there . Once we reached kuntala we were just taken back by the massive flow of the Falls. As this was peak of the season the gushing sound of water were amazing. The falls flowing between the woods was a pure delight to watch.

We managed to get a make shift stay arrangement near the falls. We confirmed the security that we would be back by 6 in the evening. We decided to check the other falls (pochera) mean time. As it was lunch we again decided to have lunch at Neelima dhaba . By this time the Dhaba guys were spotting a weird looks, Which we could imagine that probably we were the only people to taste their food twice. Anyways Masala rice and Tomato rice weren’t a bad option.

We reached pochera late noon and decided to stretch our legs a little amidst the mighty falls. The volume of water flow was really high during these days. We were just wondering about the Tenting place which my friend did once facing these majestic falls.

We realized we were late only when the sun really came down , By this time the clock had already clocked 6.00 , Oops we were late. We knew we had to pick food from the same dhaba guys before reaching Kuntala. We managed to pack some rice , for now Neelima dhaba guys were sure that they are making one of the amazing food , as we were having food for 3rd consecutive time on the same day. Apparently they would have realized that people don’t have any other options.

By the time we reached kuntala village it was completely dark and clock stuck 7.00 , we picked the security and headed 4 km towards the falls. When were were trying to check our make shift guest house we realized that we didn’t have power. Enjoying camp fire for a while without light seems to be a good idea , but what’s like sleeping in a pitch dark amidst Indian python and Bears. We decided to try our luck by calling the helpers back again from the village. We then separated ,Two of the guys along with the security headed towards the village to check for the helpers and also get some candles in case. Other guys had to wait near the guest house.

After 40 min of struggle in getting helpers, getting candles and trying to fix the electric city , We accepted that sleeping in dark is rather the only options left out. We then headed towards the other guys. We just then heard lot of bear chasing story from the watchman. We weren’t surprised to see other guys kind of sprinting towards the village. We casually said the possibility of they stepping on bear or python. With few gasp !they then managed to settle down controlling their heart beat.

Late evening started with casual songs and munching of food. The night was getting stronger and the insects were starting their day. We decided to check the fishermen who were preparing the net for the big catch of the night. They said they usually catch during night as the fish tends to come on the surface during this time. We decided to walk down 480 steps at midnight amidst woods. We had to make sure that were not stepping on any of the reptiles, occasionally ensure we are not chased by a bear.

We reached the falls with brisk walk of 20 min. we found that 6 fishermen were waiting for their turn. They said they would typically go for a run every 2 Hours. The mean time they were using for catching quick naps. Honestly to set a trap for fish in 150 feet cold water at night really needs something. We eagerly waited till the guys did their catch. After some time we heard good smiles and few fishermen emerged from the dark. They said they really had a big catch , they even offered us free fish from their hard work. we would say that after seeing such an struggle we would never take it for free.

After mid night big catch we came back to our temp guest house. By now its was pitch dark , before we could lie down the thought of pythons and bear watching us came into our minds. We also had to manage the cold weather as we didn’t carry enough tenting equipment. We decided to light candle every 30 min , till we see light . While others where trying to catch sleep , Lakshman has taken the resp of lighting next candle when the first one goes off. Finally after much fear we managed to catch some sleep after 5.00 am in the morning.

But we just managed to get an hour sleep as gushing water was inviting us for private water fall bath. We quickly managed to get down the falls having a good morning walk. Early in the morning water flowing amidst the woods was really serene. We enjoyed the private water falls for good amount of time.

We then decided to head towards Basar. Though we were feeling hungry none of us were in the mood to eat breakfast for the forth consecutive time in Neelima Dhaba. We headed towards Nirmal and enjoyed south India breakfast in Sree Krishna Bhavan. Not to mention the hot idlis and wadas were flying off the plates. After a pretty heavy breakfast we were on road again towards basar.

The road to basar from Nirmal was pretty bad as they were under construction. The sun was catching up as the day progressed, We were getting exhausted as sun drained all our energy. With many sodas and lime after we parked our car , we managed to head towards the temple. Basar being Sarawathi temple , we were amidst hundreds of kids varying in all ages practicing their writing or praying for their exams.

After a visit to Basar we decided to head towards Hyderabad via Nizampet. We also thought of a quick plan to visit the Nanded Gurudwara as it was only 70 kms from basar. Return journey is never fun , with sun scorching it was really getting painful . We just stepped on the pedal and headed towards Hyderabab

We took a good break in Highway malgudi, Which proved to be a good option. They also had kids play area and lawn to rest. We managed to stretch our legs a little bit before stepping on the gas again. We reached Hyderabad late in the evening. After the quick shower we ended our trip with Four season’s biryani.

On our next one day trip we managed to meet the security guards and handed over all the photos of his along with the fisherman folks. We started pretty early in the morning from Hyderabad around 4 am. We thought we would get day light as usual but apparently we had to drive slowly in the four lanes as the day light came, late as 6.30 . As it was start of December, the volume of the water flow wasn’t that great as it was in monsoon , but it wasn’t a bad choice to go there. We decided to reach there early as we could enjoy the falls without much crowd . We reached falls around 8.30 and we headed straight down. The serene location was wonderful to enjoy our friend’s singing for good couple of hours. The blend of melodies amidst the woods , we socking in water was really enjoyable. We decided to pick some lunch at nirmal before hitting the road back to Hyderabad.

Binoomea: Mysterious Jenolan Caves

We decided to drive to one of the oldest open caves in world on a bright weekend. Jenolan caves are situated at a distance of 175 Kms from Sydney. We have driven along the majestic blue mountains many times , this time we would be heading few more kms ahead of these mountains in New South Wales

Honestly this was my first visit to a helictite or calcite formed caves. This formation has happened caves over 300 Plus million years before. We specifically wanted to Visit the “Temple of Baal” which is supposed to be the most beautiful Caves.

As a general practice we feasted on the breakfast as to make sure we can carry on without food for a long time. We drove via many of the wonderful places or rather named beautifully. The local aboriginal language defiantly carries the smell of old times, but the interesting part is its similarities with our own ancient language. Place like Katoomba if in outskirts of Thanjavor would never been seen as a separate place. Ofcourse my favorite is “wooloomooloo” with many “oo” ‘s .

We just passed on the “Beware of Kangroo” boards but didnt spot one of these jumping in front of the car. We didn’t shy away to take breathtaking pictures of the landscape on the way. But doing so we arrived late of the schedule missing our Temple of Baal

We had to go for other option which included 3 caves including Lucas caves. We arrived just on time for the guided tour, we didn’t have time grab few snacks. We just sipped few cold drinks which we had in our car and waited for the guide to arrive. We just realized after few minutes that the tour had already started. Hmm.. this was not sounding good we again approached the ticket counter to help get the group which has started the tour.

The tour guide took in the other route just for a change. Never mind we were able to catch up with them with a small jog . We entered dark caves now, no wonder the local aboriginals called this as Binoomea (Dark Places). The object to catch our eye was a fossil of perentine , the jaw still opened. Even in dark it gave a wonderful click.

We started to have a view of amazing helictite structure. I was wondering how these amazing structures would be formed. Finally I realized the science behind that was a capillary forces acting on tiny water droplet, a force often strong enough to defy gravity. No wonder every structure was defying gravity.

The most amazing thing which you find is the kind of texture and color these helictite are formed. The amazing color was spotted in “The Minaret” a bright orange color, You can still find the droplet at the tip of the Minaret structure.

The lucas cave also had many Shawls which were more of a actually curtain being floated in the ceiling, probably a interior designer can get inspired from that. The other amazing thing to catch our eyes was a helictite with amazing color of nature.
We could easily spot various bright colors like red, blue, and few transparent strips. The illumination was adding new face to the already amazing color.

After spending few hours and making our digi cam memory almost full , we were kind of tired and not to point out we were really hungry . As we just had breakfast in the morning and its was already 6 in the evening. We weren’t lucky enough to grab something at the food counter which was already closed.

Before leaving if something we would be interested again was “Spine Tinkling Ghost Tours”. Which they say are filled with Mysterious, Legend & Ghost tour The 2 hour 'Myths, Legends and Ghosts' tour may start with Caves House and take you through any of various caves. They say there are so many stories of ghostly sightings and strange occurrences. Never mind next time
